I became interested in the work of Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais after many years studying movement, particularly Tai Chi, and Martha Graham-based dance. I graduated from the first British Feldenkrais Professional Training Programme in 1990, and am still involved in UK training programmes as an experienced practitioner, giving individual lessons to trainee teachers. I have been teaching Feldenkrais, and Feldenkrais-based voice work, both privately, and in Colleges, Universities and Adult Education Centres in the UK and abroad, ever since. I have included some of my collaborations below.
I have been singing professionally in the popular music field since 1983, and teaching voice and singing to a wide variety of students, including professional and trainee actors, since 1988. I enjoy most kinds of singing but I get the greatest pleasure from Jazz and improvisation.
Since qualifying as a Feldenkrais teacher, my ongoing project has been to develop a comprehensive awareness-based voice and singing teaching system, using the Feldenkrais approach. To this end I have explored many modern voice teaching methods, focusing particularly on the work of Jo Estill, a highly respected pioneer in the field of science-based voice training, and Alison Bagnall, an Australian Feldenkrais practitioner, speech therapist, and early collaborator of Estill’s. The Feldenkrais Embodied Voice course is the culmination of my years of teaching experience, ongoing research, and my own vocal exploration and development.
I am currently incorporating and distilling the evidence for:
…the benefits of mindfulness meditation for both health and happiness…
…and the role of the vagus nerve (10th cranial nerve) in generating chronic embodied stress and anxiety, and how this same nerve pathway can be used to reverse the negative effects of early, long-term, and even ongoing stress-related disorders.
To this end I am developing a specifically Feldenkrais-focussed form of “bodymindfulness”, something I strongly believe Moshe Feldenkrais was focussing on himself in his later years, as his final public workshops differed so much from his earlier, well-documented classes in Tel Aviv. By teaching by student-clients to undo chronic, habitual stress and anxiety my ongoing intention is to encourage a self-healing, self-developing, self-maturing ability that will continue to benefit them for the rest of their lives, as working with the Feldenkrais Method has benefitted me.
